Silver Ball Century ep. 37 - Late 1981 - We're Doing Three Playfields

Seeing Williams sell 13,000 units with their two-level playfield on Black Knight (1980), and also seeing Gottlieb sell 8,700 high-earning units of Black Hole (1981) with its lower playfield in a window, Claude Fernandez at Bally must have said: "Heck it, we're doing three playfields."

The playfield of Elektra, with six flippers in total. Two are in the usual place on the bottom, two are at the sides of the raised upper playfield, and two are in a lower playfield visible through a transparent window, where a white and gray woman's face with red lips stares out. The rest of the design looks like a sci-fi paperback cover.

In this part of 1981, we also see Stern trying out a backglass bagatelle and a snake that eats the ball, Bally introducing an early version of the ball auto-launcher, and Williams launching hundreds of balls per minute in Hyperball, which is not a pinball game but feels like it belongs in pinball history anyway.

Silver Ball Century is live at 8pm Eastern on Thursday, September 25, on twitch.tv/arborelia.
