Best of VPX #10: The Addams Family (1992)
Who says you can't take it with you?! I started this post series on Cohost, where I counted down my favorite VPX pinball tables from #50 to #11. As Cohost sadly prepares to shut down, we've reached the top 10, and I've taken the "Best of VPX" series with me to my own bearblog.
NOW you've done it! The callouts are an iconic feature of the table, and they're not just clipped from the movie, they're recorded for the machine by Raul Julia and Anjelica Huston. I have such an urge to use the callouts in this post that I'm just going to refer to one in every paragraph.
Well done, G5k! You're really on the ball. This VPX table showed up just in time for me to present it in my Best of VPX countdown on Twitch. I love the Addams Family pinball table, and up until this release, any VPX that I could find of it simply had mechs that worked incorrectly. Even the Pinball FX version worked incorrectly. Meanwhile, I had another table lined up that had been one of my favorites since I started using VPX, which I took another look at and realized, wait, this isn't top 10 material. solar_espeon pointed out that that other table wasn't even accurate to the table rules. I just used to have lower standards. Miraculously, G5k's version of The Addams Family showed up at that moment, with an emulation quality that made my top 10.
[unintelligible Cousin It noises] You could say The Addams Family is the best-selling pinball machine of all time, or you could be pedantic like me, and say it's the best-selling pinball machine since 1932. It's very satisfying to play -- not complicated like later machines, but not easy.
Keep the ball! I have a whole bucketful! The Addams Family is a particularly meaningful pinball table to me, because it's the one I remember from my childhood, when it was new. My local mini-golf course had one. It was my favorite thing to play in the mini-golf arcade. I wasn't good at pinball, but I must have intuited something about how to play The Addams Family, because I remember that once I scored over 100 million and I was so excited.
